The Course
Assessment

This course is designed to teach the necessary knowledge, skills and competencies to people seeking to become Driving Instructors.

Who this course is for

People wishing to become Driving Instructors or those currently working within the industry who wish to upgrade their skills and knowledge.

Entry Requirements

The Roads and Traffic Authority requires that all trainee driving instructors:

• are over 21 years of age
• have no endorsements on driver licence
• have held an unrestricted car licence for a minimum of three out of the past four years without suspension, disqualification, or cancellation

People wishing to train as Driving Instructors must apply to the RTA, complete an extended knowledge test, undergo a medical and police-record checks and complete a driving test.

The RTA will then issue an Eligibility Advice note, which is valid for 18 months from the date of issue.
When the Eligibility Advice has been issued that person is able to undertake the training course.

The Course

Successful completion of the course (including coursework and assignments) will earn Certificate IV in Driving Instruction TLI41207.

The Certificate IV in Driving Instruction course will be delivered in two stages. Stage one will consist of the modules from Certificate IV in Assessment and Workplace Training, while stage two will contain the driving instruction modules.

Assessment

Assessment is based on the assessment criteria of the National Competency Standards. There will be ongoing assessment of all trainees throughout the course by trainers and assessors. Trainees will also undertake regular self-assessment tasks, helping them to review their progress, and enabling them to follow their learning and competencies

At the end of the course, the trainee must successfully complete a two hour on-the-road assessment in a dual-controlled car. They must here demonstrate their ability to deliver both practical and theory training on a one-to-one basis by taking the assessor through the six topics. The trainee will use their area route plans to deliver the sessions

When this assessment has been successfully completed, the trainee will have reached the competency levels required for a Certificate IV in Driving Instruction TLI41207. The trainee will then complete a final RTA test before gaining their Driving Instructor Licence.
